About IMF-JC


The IMF-JC was established on 16 May 1964 as an umbrella organization representing all workers in the metal industries. Its strength as of the end of October 2003 was 2.06 million members and five industrial unions. It is affiliated to the International Metalworkers Federation (IMF).
Its main objectives may be summarized in the broad policy statements: to improve the rights and working conditions of metal workers; to enable them to achieve comfortable and affluent lives; and to promote solidarity and exchange with the international trade union movement. These are broken down into four concrete action areas: to play a leading role within Japan as a pace setter in the ongoing struggle for improving wages and shortening working hours and to aggressively carry out comprehensive struggle for better living and Policy and Institute / industrial policy actions. While the IMF-JC is not directly affiliated to the national center RENGO the five affiliates of the IMF-JC play an important role as a core group within the RENGO accounting for nearly 30% of its seven million membership, and the IMF-JC maintains, a close alliance with the RENGO. Internationally, it functions actively as a core organization in the IMF, and in Asia as its largest member, plays a principal role in wide range of activities from regular meetings with the IMF affiliates to conducting solidarity actions..
